Queen's Bath
An ancient lava tube fed by a fresh water spring lies hidden along the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. Reserved in ancient times for the Hawaiian royalty to enjoy, these magical fresh water phenomena were known as Queen's Baths. To enter, one must descend a few rungs on a massive hand-hewn wooden ladder to reach the chilled water below. At the entrance near the ladder, the light clearly illuminates the rocky bottom below, but as one swims toward the back of the cave, the water turns to inky blackness. Here the swimmer looks up through a chimney in the ceiling where the refracted spectrum of light dances on the water around her.
